Be Patient, And Don’t Panic
November 16, 2009
The economy has claimed a number of big-ticket mega-developments around Boston, but Federal Realty Trust continues to push ahead with its 5 million-square-foot, 50 acre Assembly on the Mystic project. That’s largely thanks to a public-private partnership in which federal and state funds shoulder more than half the project’s infrastructure tab.

Planning officials envision the Mystic River as a major recreational area in the near future
November 5, 2009
Planners last week outlined six strategies to create and develop open space and to connect trails along the lower Mystic River corridor, as part of an ongoing project to maximize this valuable recreational resource.
During a forum to solicit feedback on the work of the Lower Mystic River Corridor Strategy project last Wednesday night, Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) planners unveiled Phase 2 of the project that began in 2007. The purpose of the project, planned for the cities of Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, and Somerville, is to bring the neglected waterway that encompasses 76 square miles of watershed (though the project is restricted to the six-city area) from the Lower Mystic Lake all the way up to East Boston.

Somerville development gets $65M boost
July 21, 2009
The private developers of a mixed-use project in Somerville, Mass., will receive $65 million in federal and state funding.
The Assembly on the Mystic project will receive the funds through state bonds and federal stimulus dollars. Originally, the project did not qualify for federal stimulus funds because the infrastructure work was not on a required state list. The state added the project to its Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) in May, making it eligible for federal aid. The TIP list is compiled by state and regional officials.

Megaproject gets a big boost
July 21, 2009
After a decade of planning, construction on the 66-acre Assembly on the Mystic in Somerville will finally begin in earnest this summer. Yesterday, the state committed $65 million for an access road into the megadevelopment.
The developer and city officials said they will use the stimulus money to hire scores of construction workers by the fall. The swift ramp-up is a prime reason why Governor Deval Patrick selected the project as one of several large private developments that will receive public funds.

Assembly on the Mystic Celebrates Somerville’s Future at ArtBeat in Davis Square
July 17, 2009
(Somerville, MA) On July 17th Federal Realty Investment Trust hosted an art booth for children at Somerville’s annual ArtBeat festival in Davis Square. The festival, presented by Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Somerville Arts Council, celebrated “Somerville…of the future,” encouraging professional, local and emerging child artists to envision the future of Somerville. The festival drew hundreds of people to Davis Square and featured music, performing arts, a parade, craft vendors, dance, theater and food. Paintings, photography, glasswork and handcrafted clothing were also displayed by artists and vendors.
This year Federal Realty’s Assembly on the Mystic booth allowed children to create their own artwork and visions of how they imagine Somerville will look in 20 years. The young artists’ renditions of the future Somerville presented a wide array of ideas for the community portrayed with paint, markers and stickers. The booth represented the exciting progress that is already underway at Assembly Square while at the same time celebrating the artists who play a vital part in Somerville’s arts culture community today.
Artwork from last year’s ArtBeat are displayed on two 8 feet by 8 feet panels along the Assembly Square Marketplace parking lot, depicting this Somerville redevelopment and the specific ecological benefits it will provide to the Mystic River. Federal Realty looks forward to participating in ArtBeat for years to come and to incorporating the visionary artwork into future art installations.
Every year ArtBeat brings Somerville residents together to celebrate the community’s diverse arts culture. Federal Realty Investment Trust is pleased to participate in the annual festival for the second year and looks forward to Assembly on the Mystic becoming a part of Somerville’s future.

The East Somerville renaissance is upon us, says ESMS
March 13, 2009
A new hotel by Harris Park, rebuilding the East Somerville Community School, creating vibrant community murals and unifying store fronts are just a few plans that emanated from the back room of the Mt. Vernon Restaurant Monday night.
East Somerville Main Streets (ESMS) held its second annual meeting at the neighborhood eatery amidst a roomful of small business owners, residents and elected officials. The positive energy that came from teamwork amongst the many volunteers that comprise the group (ESMS Executive Director Carrie Dancy often says she is the only paid staffer) was palpable amongst much applause and shouts of a lot of good work done in East Somerville-the "forgotten" part of the city-over the past two years.
